Design Innovation

The full exploration and application of modern design technology and communication platforms to address socio- economic problems, enhance consumer experiences and improve the human condition. This course teaches the fundamentals of User Experience Design and how to solve real world problems. It provides trainees with the digital and technological skills needed to enhance problem-solving abilities. These skills include 3D Design, Graphic Design & Illustration, Web development, Digital Marketing and Audio- Visual communications, amongst other exciting electives like Photography, Film & Animation, and Robotics.

They fall under three main buckets of specialization:

Communication Design
Manufacturing (Design for Manufacturing)
Programming & Electronics

Trainees will learn how to approach client briefs with confidence, add value to companies or start their own businesses. The Curriculum runs parallel with industry demand, making course content always relevant and up to date, and providing the creative competencies that every employer looks for. The skills taught in this course are hyper- transferable and are extremely important in both the formal and informal sectors of society. The course will run for 18 months with 6 months of practical attachment. Trainees will, in the first 3 months, be exposed to introductory courses involving all three buckets allowing them to explore and peak their interests before specializing in one bucket. The regulator, the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), will confer on trainees a National Certificate in one of Multimedia or CAD/CAM after completing the respective required units. The three buckets of specialization will form as enrichment to the certification from CTVET.

The Maker Spaces under the Programming & Electronics and Manufacturing buckets of Design Innovation are fabrication labs that accelerate the practical skills acquisition of learners. It employs the use of 3D printing techniques for rapid prototyping, programming microcontrollers to control basic and complex electronic circuitry for robotic and internet of things applications and using simulated virtual reality devices to practice welding techniques. The manufacturing sector creates an avenue for product development utilizing micro-modular machines to teach the fundamentals of Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) Machining.
